Riprap Cost on Smith Lake: Ranges, Fees and What Moves the Price

What will riprap cost on your Smith Lake lot? Nobody publishes Smith Lake or Alabama riprap prices, so this page is upfront about that. It gives the national ranges that are published, works them out for common shoreline lengths, adds Alabama Power's permit fees, and lists the things on a Smith Lake job that push a quote up or down.

The published numbers

The only riprap cost data we could source is national. Angi's riprap cost guide, labeled 2025 data, says:

Average project
$20,000
Typical range
$10,000 to $30,000
Per linear foot
$70 to $400
Rock, per ton
$20 to $110
Structural engineer
$200 to $1,500 total, if one is needed
Smith Lake quotes
None published: [PRICE]

Angi notes that the total "can vary widely depending on the property" and that "The more difficult it is to access the shoreline, the higher the riprap installation cost will be." These are national figures. Local quotes vary, and a written price from someone who has walked your shoreline is the one to plan around.

Worked examples

Multiplying Angi's per-foot range by common shoreline lengths gives a sense of scale. The spread is wide because the range is wide.

ShorelineAt $70 per footAt $400 per foot
50 feet$3,500$20,000
100 feet$7,000$40,000
150 feet$10,500$60,000
200 feet$14,000$80,000
300 feet$21,000$120,000

Add Alabama Power's permit fee to any of these: $400 for new riprap, or $200 if the job is a repair such as adding stone to an existing riprap footprint.

Alabama Power's fees

From Alabama Power's Smith Lake guidelines, revised July 15, 2025. All are non-refundable.

FeeAmount
General Construction Fee (new shoreline construction)$400
Elevated Structure Construction Fee$500
General Repair Fee (repair of a substantial degree)$200
Permit Modification Fee$100
Unauthorized Construction Fee$600
Unauthorized Structure Repair Fee$400
Non-Compliance Fee$800

The last three are a good reason not to start before the permit is issued. The permit guide explains each one.

What moves the price on a Smith Lake job

  • Access. Whether stone and equipment arrive by barge or over land, and what's in the way: trees, a steep yard, a narrow lot, a house close to the water. Angi names access as a main cost driver.
  • Length and height of the bank. More bank means more stone, more filter and more labor.
  • Stone. How much is needed, what size, and how far it travels from the quarry. Angi's $20 to $110 per ton gives a sense of the material cost alone.
  • What goes under the stone. A filter fabric or a sand and crushed-stone filter adds material and time. The Corps' programmatic permit says filter fabric "shall be considered and may be required."
  • An old wall. Leaving it, putting riprap at its base, or tearing it out are very different jobs.
  • Turtle habitat. On identified shorelines, enhanced natural stabilization adds a set rock mix, logs, native plants and a survival requirement, and has to be built between November 1 and March 31. See turtle-habitat shorelines.
  • Engineering. If a structural engineer is involved, Angi puts that at $200 to $1,500 total.
  • Paperwork. Whether the contractor's price includes the sketch, the application and the permit fee.

Seawalls, docks and lifts

We didn't find published Smith Lake or Alabama prices for seawall work, dock repair, new docks or boat lifts, so we don't quote any. Seawall work: [PRICE]. Dock repair: [PRICE]. New docks: [PRICE]. Boat lifts: [PRICE]. Alabama Power's fees still apply: $400 for new construction and $200 for substantial repair.

Comparing quotes

If you get more than one price, line them up on the same terms:

  • Linear feet covered, and the price per foot.
  • Stone size or class, and roughly how many tons.
  • What goes under the stone, and how deep the toe is set.
  • Who prepares and files the Alabama Power application, and whether the fee is included.
  • How the work reaches the shore, and what yard repair is included afterward.
  • For turtle-habitat work, the plants, logs and who handles plant survival.
  • Start date, and how the job fits the permit's one-year limit and any winter window.

Cost questions

Why can't you give a Smith Lake price?

Because none is published that we could source. Rather than guess, this site shows the national range with its source and leaves local prices as [PRICE] until there's real data.

Is the $400 permit fee part of the contractor's price?

It depends on the contractor. Ask, and get the answer in the written quote.

Is adding stone to old riprap cheaper?

The permit is: $200 instead of $400 when Alabama Power treats it as adding riprap to an existing footprint. The work itself depends on how much stone is needed and how it gets to the shore.
